Unfaced insulation installs quickly, with few tools. Insulate between rafters when constructing a raised, or cathedral, ceiling in a home, or when making the attic a heated space. Insulation slows the movement of warm air toward cooler air. Unfaced insulation refers to a batting style material that lacks a paper or plastic moisture barrier. Batting insulation comes in rolls, and the material may be cut to size so that it will fit into rafter bays, or the spaces between rafters. Air Flow. Most roofing material requires ventilation to prevent moisture buildup, which could cause rot or mold to form on framing lumber. Fitting insulation into rafter bays prohibits this air movement. Attics Installing Insulation Roofs. Adding Attic Insulation About Attic Ventilation. Manufacturers solve the problem with baffles that must be installed before adding insulation. The baffles prevent insulation from completely seating against the plywood or wood slats on which roofing was installed. This provides just enough air movement between the insulation and the roof. Friction Fit. Unfaced batting insulation depends on a friction fit to keep it place. The friction of the fiberglass insulation material against the rafters, baffles and plywood or wood slats is typically enough to hold it in place. You can assist the friction hold by adding metal wires or bands on the inside of rafters near the edges. Tuck fiberglass batting into the bays, but dont compress the material. Install Blownin Attic Insulation. Blownin cellulose insulation also called loose fill or wool insulation. Install the rafter vents adjacent to the soffit vents. The insulations loft, which is created by air between long strands of fiberglass, is what gives the insulation its full capacity to prevent warm air migration. Moisture Barrier. Unfaced insulation goes up more quickly than insulation with paper or plastic facing. Flaps on faced insulation must be stapled between rafters to hold it in place. However, the lack of facing means that you must add a moisture barrier over the insulation. Moisture barriers prevent water vapor in the air from pooling on the fiberglass, where it can ruin the materials insulative ability and foster the conditions that lead to mold and mildew development on rafters. Sheets of 6 mil plastic applied over the rows of unfaced insulation in rafter bays provides the proper moisture barrier. Overlap the seams by a few inches for full coverage. Moisture barriers go on the warmer side during heating season, which typically means the heated attic or living space. Protective Equipment. Fiberglass creates an itchy irritant for some people, and the airborne fibers are a respiratory problem as well. A long sleeved shirt and gloves help keep these fibers away from the skin.
